Newborns diagnosed from October 2012 to December 2019 who are having follow-up consultation in the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) OPD Genetics Clinic will be the focus of the study. Qualitative descriptive design is suitable in describing the Filipino mothers’ experiences, concerns and insights on the delivery of MSUD newborn screening result and confirmatory result. This study will be conducted in 12 months. This study will utilize a qualitative descriptive methodology design. This will be supplemented by data from key informant interviews with healthcare professionals. Method: This will be a study on the communication process of an MSUD positive newborn screening result and a confirmatory test based on the experiences and insights of 20 Filipino mothers. To explore the information seeking coping strategies of the Filipino mothers in taking care of their newborn after the receipt of positive NBS and confirmatory test results for MSUDs.To identify factors which affect the communication of positive MSUD newborn screen result and confirmatory test result to families.To identify the perceptions of Filipino mothers on the communication of diagnosis after receiving their child’s positive NBS result and confirmatory testing for MSUD.Objective: To explore the experiences and insights of Filipino mothers upon receiving the positive MSUD newborn screening result and confirmatory test results for MSUD in their children from October 2012 to December 2019. Sufficient knowledge and a better understanding of implications and management of MSUD can help parents of children with the condition appreciate more the importance of timely monitoring and coordination with the healthcare team. The diagnosis session experience sets the tone for the provider-patient relationship which also affects the outcome of management for patients with MSUD. The common challenges in the diagnosis and management of this condition include late diagnosis, lack of access to metabolic specialists and medical supplies, nosocomial septicemia, and nutritional complications. In the Philippines, MSUD’s cumulative incidence is 1:68,406. MSUD affects an estimated 1 in 185,000 infants worldwide. Background: Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD) is an inherited disorder in which the body is unable to process certain protein building blocks or amino acids properly.
